Over 700 private schools temporarily closed this school year - DepEd

A total of 748 out of 14,435 private schools have suspended their operations these year due to the effects of COVID-19 according to the Department of Education (DepEd).

Due to the temporary school closures, 3,233 teachers and 40,345 students were affected.

Most schools which suspended operations came from Central Luzon (141), CALABARZON (121), Metro Manila (96), Western Visayas (90) and Bicol Region (46).

DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones said schools cited low enrollment and teachers' exodus to public schools as two of the common reasons why these schools have temporarily closed. SBriones expressed hope that as soon as the economy recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic, these schools will re-open.

“Mag-improve ang economy baka magbago din sila ng kanilang pananaw lalo na iyong iba may mga recognition na talaga sila ang sinasabi naman nila temporary for this year hindi sila magbubukas muna."

Briones also said that the government has plans to aid the education sector affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. She cited the provisions of Bayanihan to Recover as One Act, which when passed into law, will provide a one-time cash assitance to teaching and non-teaching personnel.

DepEd's 2021 proposed budget also contains provision for additional aid for closed private schools including teachers and subsidies and allowance for public and private school students in families that are experiencing financial difficulties.
